Viktoria, 34 years old. Evacuated with her son, 9 years old.

Route: Poltava, Ukraine – Hungary – Zagreb, Croatia – Hvar Island, Croatia. 2263 km from home

“On the evening of February 23rd, I was going to my new job. And on February 24th, my mother called me from Myrhorod and said that the war had begun. They told me not to go anywhere to work, to stay at home. I didn’t hear any explosions, but I understood that we had to act. We set up the basement, our friends and neighbours later moved there. We lived in the kitchen, because it was faster to go down to the basement from there, as soon as the sirens went off.

On March 8th, I learned how to load and unload a Kalashnikov assault rifle. If I didn’t have a child and a husband, I would go to war. The war affected me a lot, I couldn’t eat, I was constantly nauseous.

We lived in the city until May. Then, one situation changed everything. I needed to go to the clinic, and I left my son at home. He knows all the safety equipment and knows where to run in case of a siren. But the siren turned on and he called me, asking in a panic where to hide and what to do. I came home very quickly, my maternal instinct kicked in.

After this siren, I decided that I had to leave. My child did not want to leave his father and friends. The only thing he agreed to was to go to the sea. That’s why we chose Croatia. We went to Hungary, and from there to Zagreb. It felt very strange that there were no sirens.

At first, the volunteers settled us in the centre in Varazhdin. We were looking for work and housing. We were invited to work in Hvar.

We are very grateful to the Croats—they provided us with housing, they fed us, I got a job at the Hvar hotel.

I dreamed that the summer would end and we would go home. But now I understand that nothing is changing, the situation is getting worse.

If you return, you’re taking your child to war.

Now that the tourist season is over, I’m trying to figure out where I should go next.”
