ENGLISH

Sea buckthorn: Senecio bicolor subsp. cineraria

The scientific name of this genus comes from the Latin senex, meaning old man, and refers to the fluffy, white fruiting heads of many species. In Croatian flora, 45 taxa of brushwood have been recorded, of which four are protected. The coastal taxon differs from the rest in its bushy growth, as all the others are herbaceous.

Sea buckthorn grows along the sandy and rocky sea coast. It contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are very toxic to liver cells, so it is not consumed orally. However, fresh juice squeezed from the leaves is considered a successful remedy for sore eyes. It has a mildly irritating effect that increases the flow of blood to the eyes and thus calms an infection faster. Regular use is said to be effective in removing cataracts and treating conjunctivitis, but it should not be used without medical supervision.

Senecio bicolor subsp. cineraria
