ENGLISH

Pittospore: Pittosporum tobira

The Latin name of the genus Pittosporum is derived from the Greek words pissa, petta (resin) and spora (seed), due to its sticky, resinous seed coat. The species name tobira is the Japanese word for the plant. It grows naturally in Japan, Korea and China, and was introduced to Europe in the first part of the 19th century. It is grown as an ornamental evergreen shrub, raised as a hedge, and to protect properties from gusts of strong wind. It is slow-growing and resistant to drought, cold and poor soil.

The flowers are often visited by bees that collect nectar. Pittospore honey is light yellow, slightly greenish, and tasty, although bitter. It has a pronounced smell of a plant flower. It remains liquid for a long time, and crystallizes into medium-sized crystals. It is considered to have a beneficial effect on diseases of the respiratory organs; therefore, the product is in demand. The colour of the honey varies based on the pollen of the vines blooming at the same time.

Смолосем’яник: Pittosporum tobira
