Olive tree: Olea europaea

Hundreds of thousands of pages have been written about the olive tree in the millennia of its presence in human life and culture. First of all, there is olive oil obtained from its fruits, as well as leaves with medicinal properties and wood of exceptional quality. In the past, the leaves were used as fuel for lamps and as money. According to tradition, it is believed that the cross on which Jesus was crucified was made of olive and cedar wood.

The olive tree is a symbol of loyalty and faithfulness, God’s providence and care for his people, and a emblem of peace. The oldest living olive tree is believed to be a specimen in Sardinia, which is around 4000 years old. Next is a tree in Crete older than 2000 years. In Croatia, the trees in Brijuni, in Lun on Pag, and in Kaštel Štafilić stand out for their age, at about 1,600 years old.

Olea europaea
