Masha. 16 years old. Self-evacuee.

Route: Mykolaiv, Ukraine – Hungary – Zagreb, Croatia. 964 km from home

“I play football competitively (as a goalkeeper) at the Mykolaiv Sports Lyceum.

My parents lived in the village of Plodove in the Kherson region, which is 70 kilometres from there.

On the night of February 24th, I was woken up in the lyceum dormitory by two explosions. The teachers said that everything was fine and we went back to bed. After 2 hours, at 5 in the morning, 2 more explosions rang out. Everyone understood that the war had begun. We were told to pack a backpack with underwear and warm things. At that time, my parents could not take me, because their city was already occupied. We were taken from the lyceum by bus. There were 24 children and 2 educators in total. We reached the city of Pidbuzh (near the border with Poland), where we were accommodated in the residential building of the creative academy. We lived there for 3 months. In May, it was decided that any children’s relatives living in Europe should take them. Anyone who did not have relatives, our teachers became our guardians and could evacuate them. I have an aunt in Croatia and she agreed to take me to Zagreb. I saw her several times whenever she would come to Ukraine. When it was time to evacuate to Europe, I spent 8 hours at the Polish border, because I did not have guardianship. We waited for a volunteer who would agree to be my guardian to cross the border. After crossing the border and all the paperwork, we arrived in Zagreb and my aunt took over custody. It took 3 months, and I was without documents all this time.

Now I live with other families in a hostel for Ukrainians, only 25 people.

I continue to play football and I am preparing to sign a contract with Dinamo Zagreb. Starting in September, I will start studying at a sports school in Zagreb. I will be in the 3rd year (11th grade).

I chose this plant because I love snow, winter, and the new year. It reminds me of these things.”
