Laurel: Laurus nobilis

In ancient times, laurel was considered a sacred tree, the tree of the god Apollo, a symbol of wisdom, glory, gratitude, and recognition. In Rome, winners and poets were crowned with laurel leaves. The word laureate comes from the name of the genus of the plant, and the academic title baccalaureate comes from the name of the laurel bean—in Latin, bacca.

Bay leaves have been used as medicine and as a spice since ancient times. Laurel oil obtained from the fruits is medicinal. Laurel preparations have an antiseptic effect, strengthen the appetite, improve digestion, and are also an effective expectorant, so they are used to treat chronic bronchitis, colds, flu, and rheumatism.

Laurus nobilis
