ENGLISH

Karina, 26 years old, and daughter Masha, 6 years old. The family was evacuated.

Route: Nova Kakhovka, Ukraine – Crimea (temporarily occupied territory) – Russia – Georgia – Turkey – Germany – Zagreb, Croatia. 6922 km from home

Karina: “My husband and I lived in the city of Nova Kakhovka, in the Kherson region. He is a highly paid engineer working at wind farms.

Masha: “I had a best friend, Ksyusha, now we are far away. Sometimes we talk on the phone.”

Karina: “On February 23, my friend (Ksyusha’s mother) and I made a cake to order, and they stayed with us for the night. My husband was on a business trip to Zaporizhzhia (251 kilometres). At 5 in the morning, we woke up to the sound of fireworks, but then we realized they were bomb explosions. I immediately called my husband and he got home 30 minutes before the occupation of our city.

We spent the next 7 days in the basement, which we practically did not leave, because the bombing was non-stop. Then we got used to it, went up to the apartment, and lived in it for another 2 months.

We tried to go to free Ukraine several times. The first time, the Russian military did not let us out. The last time, we managed to get to Crimea. Everyone is interrogated and checked at the borders. They connect phones to their system and can view everything, even what you have deleted. My friend had everything from the past year restored to her phone. If they find something (like a pro-Ukrainian position), the person is returned or captured. It was very scary that we might not be released, or that they might put a stamp banning us from entering Russia—then we would be stuck in occupied territory. I waited for my husband being interrogated for 3 hours. After crossing the border, we went through Russia to Georgia, and then flew to Zagreb.

Our friends were evacuated to Zagreb and we came to them.

When the war is over, we want to go home.

Because of the evacuation, the daughter has become very withdrawn. The language barrier prevents her from communicating with children on the playground, and they move away from her. Now we work a lot and it has had a great effect on her psychological state.”

It was 169 kilometres to the border with free Ukraine.
