ENGLISH

Juniperus phoenicea

This species of the genus Juniperus, Croatian pines, are often said to behave quite opposite to all other conifers (except maybe yew). Namely, they grow very slowly, they love the hot sun, they tolerate even the poorest soil, are separated into male and female plants, and have fleshy cones similar to beans.

Gluhač is a popular species among bonsai growers. Cones of Gluhač are not poisonous, but due to their resinous, aromatic, and astringent taste, they are not even edible in their unprocessed state. Their composition is not sufficiently known and the possibilities of their application in nutrition have not been sufficiently explored. Here on the island of Hvar, juniper and juniper berraies (Juniperus oxycedrus) used to be added as a spice to goulash and sauerkraut. Oil obtained from hornbeam and other types of pine is used to destroy skin parasites on livestock.

There are some similarities with the Pistacia terebinthus or J. sabina—a protected species of Croatian flora which grow at altitudes above 1000 meters. However, this species contains a very toxic essential oil, once used to induce abortion. Therefore, the Latin name of the whole pine genus comes from this abortive property of the oil; Latin juvenis – young, pario – I give birth.

Juniperus phoenicea
