ENGLISH

Caropbrotus acinaciformis

The species name acinaciformis comes from Latin and means sabre-shaped. This describes the fleshy leaves of this plant. The flowers are a bright purplish-pink colour and are pollinated by bees. The fruit that develops in August and September is fleshy and becomes leathery when dried. It is very tasty fresh, which is evident in the name of the genus itself. In Greek, karpos means fruit and brotos means edible.

It is often planted as a stabilizer for sandy soils, a protector against fire because of its abundance of water (succulent), and as a weed plant. It has spread wildly throughout our coast and islands. It tolerates drought, salt, and poor soils. Fresh juice from the leaves is used internally and externally as an antiseptic and rinsing the throat and oral cavity (it has an anti-inflammatory effect), and preparations from the fruits are used to treat heart problems and dysentery.

Caropbrotus acinaciformis
